HOW WE WORK
READ MORE ABOUT US HERE
Freedom Bakery is a social enterprise in Glasgow. We train people with convictions in artisan baking and related skills with the intention of helping them find sustainable employment. The baking industry holds the largest potential for jobs in the food industry in Scotland.
Our philosophy is that learning within a fully operational and self-sustaining enterprise-model is the most pragmatic approach to create employability prospects for people with convictions. It allows them to hold responsibility and feel that they are a part of a respected and productive team. Sustainable employment has been shown to decrease reoffending dramatically. For every person with a conviction who can stay in employment the Scottish taxpayer is saved £940,000 per individual.
Baking is also a craft that benefits people's wellbeing and mental health. It is a creative activity yet one that is also technical. It therefore can appeal to people from both perspectives. It is something that is not just for work but can be shared with family. We have found that the process can have far reaching benefits upon people's confidence, self-esteem and motivation through the difficult process of rehabilitation.
Freedom bakery is a non-profit community interest company. It was launched in April 2015 in HMP Low Moss and has grown successfully and now operates from its own purpose built bakery in Glasgow.
