HOW WE WORK
READ MORE ABOUT US HERE
The Freedom Bakery is a social enterprise based at HMP Low Moss, near Glasgow, training people in prison in artisan baking with the intention of finding an industry-related career post-release. The baking industry holds the largest potential for jobs in the food industry in Scotland.
Our philosophy is that learning within a fully operational and self-sustaining enterprise-model is the most pragmatic approach to create employability prospects for people in prison, because it allows them to hold responsibility and feel that they are a part of a respected and productive team. Sustainable employment has been shown to decrease reoffending dramatically. For every person with a conviction who can stay in employment the Scottish taxpayer is saved £940,000 per individual.
Freedom bakery is a non-profit community interest company, which was registered in April 2015. It is the first social enterprise to establish itself within a prison in Scotland.
